Together, we are Atonement!

Our mission.

“Embrace, Equip and Send”

As an interdependent congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) we celebrate the core beliefs of our denomination. For more information on our beliefs, please visit the ELCA website.

At Atonement, we encourage conversation from diverse viewpoints toward faith living and emphasize these core values:

  • We are saved by God's grace, an unearned gift

  • We are led by the Spirit, everyone is called to serve others

  • Faith is formed through the study of the Bible, our Christian tradition and our human experience

Our mission statement embodies the three historic purposes of the church. These purposes are amplified by our core values:

  • We need Jesus

  • We need each other

  • We serve a world in need

Our History

The 1960’s ushered in rapid changes in the Tess Corners community. For years the trading center of a fairly sparsely popularized rural, Tess Corners was becoming a popular and growing suburban community of the metropolitan Milwaukee area. The Southern Wisconsin District of the American Lutheran Church recognized the potential for the area to support, and be served by a new mission church. In 1961, the District Board of American Missions of ALC purchased the five and one-half acre site bordered by Janesville Road and Durham Drive.

Atonement was organized by the American Lutheran Church in 1962 at our former site next to “Bushy’s,” on Janesville Road.

In 2008 Atonement moved ½ mile away to the current location at S70 W16244 Martin Drive. This move has allowed Atonement to more fully accomplish the mission to multiply ministry and “grow in Christ in every way.”
